Witches Houses

Witches do not live
in gingerbread houses
not in this town anyhow.
They inhabit
tall and narrow
terrace houses
with barleysugar pillars
around  windows and doors,
or tiny wooden cottages
tipping dangerously among tangled weeds.
Heavy dark velvet curtains
fringed with cream bobbles
hang in the hallway
hiding
the witches’ kitchens
from children’s prying eyes.
The front door is always open
so the witch can see
children walking home from school
up the street.

No use crossing the road –
there are witches that side too.
